This Sunday I actually met other London hoopers! You’re all shocked, I can tell.
It’s taken quite some time, but I put a few feelers out on hooping.org and hoopcity.ca for some fellow London hoopers to come out and play, and it finally happened! I met Ri, her friend Brad, and Ada, who I invited via Couchsurfing.org. There was some more interest particularly from Couchsurfing but loads of people unavailable, but at least the interest is there!
We met at 11 am with no particular plans, as predicted, weather was unappealing so I don’t think anyone was sure of how much time we’d get. It was a good mix though, Brad came to juggle, but we coaxed him into Man-Hooping (Mooping!), Ri and I both being novices, and Ada being swish and amazing (she’s only been doing it as long as Ri and I…damnit!) even bringing Polypro hoops….I had to try them! But considering how much everyone raves about them, they are so strange. Almost weightless, it almost feels like they are uncontrollable and yet they respond better than weighted hoops?! I also had my first dab at slacklining, something else that’s quite odd but I bet once you can stand on it must be brilliant. For someone as scared of heights as I am, definitely somewhat of a surprise!
Anyway it was so nice to jam with other people, we had music so there was a good flow going all round, I taught Ri a normal weave, while Ada taught me an inverse weave, I taught Ri the basics of a shimmy and Ada a wedgie trick, etc. Also after about an hour of bruised ankles I can nearly, very nearly do a kickstart. Yes, that sounds ridiculous, but something about kick-starts and kick-ups still eludes me but I’m definitely almost there. Anyway I feel pretty broken after all this and hoop school on Saturday – I pulled a muscle in my chest at hoop school, and only noticed at 3am Sunday morning when I ACTUALLY thought I was having a heart attack… slightly embarrassed there. But that is how much it hurt, so don’t forget to warm up kids!
I’m slightly sad that my WordPress isn’t advanced enough to post videos, but I’m sure I’ll upload it soon enough – I made a fantastic video of Ada and I, and about 2 minutes in, telling myself “Do something cool for the camera”, I hit myself so hard in the forehead I’m surprised I don’t currently have a big red monobrow. A must see, when I get my YouTube account!
Burning Man update – I emailed Everlasting Tattoo in San Francisco today, to see if they’re available to ink me after I come back from the desert. Current flight prices on August 25th – September 5th = £600.
Oh, and animal update – Vets cost £300 today, but Bubba finally ate, after a week and a half!! YES!! The stress may soon be over!
