Finally!! My tiny Swhoop video is compiling, I have finished project “lose my sanity/Zuzanna’s wedding reception game” and now can get on with my life! Hooray!
So, Swhoop. Swhoop was amazing, thank you Emma Kerr of Hooping Mad for selling it to me at Hoopoclock, it was fun, educational and frustrating, and full of delicious food. I drove to Bristol from Newbury on Friday morning, and for a change the SatNav only got me partially lost and not that far from my destination – my first ever CouchSurfing host Dave’s house (a massive winner. Another reason to return to Bristol). I decided to troll the 30 minutes down to Trinity Arts Centre – and a note to you all – Google maps is actually fairly accurate when it comes to walking duration times… I’m not falling for that one again.
Anyway, the Friday was full of things going on. My first workshop was with the famous Malcolm Stuart, teaching us about “Flailing” (if you’ve seen Malcolm’s style, you’ll understand this). First off, I have to say I was surprised at all the workshop content (seeing as this was my first Hoop gathering). It wasn’t about teaching crazy tricks every 5 minutes – most of the workshops were set of challenging your routine, pushing yourself, and doing the unexpected. Malcolm’s class was just that – “flail” being doing something experimental and unexpected and turning into a move, finding a circuit in which the moves can continue endlessly. He was an excellent teacher, so ridiculously energetic and enthused. After that I felt pretty pumped and went on to doing a lot of workshops that day… Next up was Bags teaching his trademark “Poop” (Poi-Hoop) – Z spins. A Z spin is when the hoop travels on a vertical/wall plane and your wrist naturally twists during rotation, creating a weird flutter. We learnt butterflops, zircles, zing zangs and lots of other things beginning with Z. Lots to put into the multi repertoire.
After that, a basics Poi lesson with Kay Dent. I’ve only just started with Poi, but mostly because it makes learning multi-hoops a lot easier, as you can usually do the moves without hurting yourself too much and learn what your hands were doing. Another wrist-based/multi workshop followed with Birte doing 2 hoops… yet another hour with a failed attempt at 3 beat weave!! But it was interesting, as with Kay and Birte, both had different methods of going into 3 beat. Birte also taught us “thread the needle”, although for some reason when I do this move my hoops seem to move inwards and not outwards (think Poi “butterfly”). Maybe I’m doing a dead butterfly. Who knows! After that we had Angie Mack’s workshop on wedgies, which despite having before and practicing, was totally lost on me at this point and I could only do it in the opposite direction…
Whilst Gail O’Brien taught her rolls workshop upstairs, Emma took us beginners and taught us chest rolls, which after such a long time of attempting, are more easy than I would have expected! Hooray! The day was rounded off by a talk on firehooping and then a fire jam… and I fire hooped!!! It was still scary. There were a few other first-timers but they seemed not to be so anxious, and happy to do lifts… me not so much. But the point is that I did it, and it wasn’t too bad!
I left before the firejam, seeing as I hadn’t actually met my host yet. Me being ballsy, I had decided earlier in the day I wasn’t afraid of Bristol despite Londoners telling me to be careful. Pah! I said. I’m from Nottingham, me. Well, the street up to the Fishponds is VERY SCARY, so whilst some woman screamed at a shop owner that she was going to kill him for 20 minutes, I decided to quietly wait for a bus. Clever old me. Dave turned out to be a most excellent chap and we stayed up late chatting (although I think my eyes were closed, so knackered). I did realise that for some reason my sleeping bag has shrunk to chest height though, so by trying desperately to keep warm I bunched together too much, and by morning rigor mortis had almost set in. Not so good when you’re looking forward to a weekend of workshops!
Anyway, to be continued, otherwise this will be a massive post! Will post in the next few days with part 2 of Swhoop, including my little vid from some of the showcase…
P.s. Burning Man presale tickets released tomorrow!!
P.p.s. Here’s how my dreads are doing:
They’ve had 2 bicarb washes and 3 rolls with aloe vera juice. They’re really starting to take shape!
